WREN, FRED (1947-) American karate champion, instructor, and promoter Wren was named to every major Top 10 poll between 1970 and 1975 and ranked number-1 fighter in America by Professional Karate Magazine in 1973. His first major victories came at the 1969 and 1970 US Championships in Dallas. where he won the light-weight title. In 1973 he was grand champion at the USKA Grand Nationals and the Mardi Gras Nationals in New Orleans. He repeated the latter victory in 1974 and 1975. Trainer of such regional champions as Jim Miller, Harold Gross, Walt Bone, and D P Hill. Wren co-founded and promoted until 1974 the Top 10 Nationals in St Louis with Mike Anderson. Member of the Who’s Who in the Martial Arts.
